Sources & Credits

The Oasis of Murals Legacy Project is being built from surviving records, current organizational sources, historical publications, photographs, and firsthand recollections. This page explains how those materials are used and credited.

CORE SOURCE LAYERS

How the record is assembled

Primary / Contemporary Records

Surviving Action Council material, archived versions of oasisofmurals.com, board records, dedication information, historical photographs, and other material created close to the events being documented.

Current Official Sources

Material currently published by Action 29 Palms, the City of Twentynine Palms, and other organizations speaking for their own programs and records.

Secondary Sources

Later brochures, histories, articles, compilations, and research documents used to reconstruct dates, locations, artists, subjects, and changes over time.

Firsthand Recollections

Memories from Michael Collins and other participants or witnesses. Recollections are identified as such and are not silently substituted for documentary evidence.

FOUNDATIONAL MATERIAL

Documents anchoring this draft

The current research draft relies heavily on the 2021 Oasis of Murals and Public Art brochure created by Vickie Waite for Action 29 Palms and reprinted/updated with sponsorship from the City of Twentynine Palms Public Arts Advisory Committee. It is used alongside surviving pages from the original oasisofmurals.com website, recovered Action Council records, current public sources, and material preserved by Michael Collins.

When two sources disagree—such as a date, address, title, or historical numbering—the disagreement is kept visible until stronger evidence resolves it.

A good archive does not hide uncertainty. It shows visitors where the evidence is strong, where memory adds context, and where questions remain open.

PHOTOGRAPHS & ARTWORK

Image provenance and credits

Photographs and scans used during the working-draft stage are tracked with their source whenever possible. Historic mural images recovered from the original OasisOfMurals.com archive are credited to that archive and to Michael Collins / Vickie Waite, as applicable, consistent with the surviving site copyright notice. Images derived from later publications remain subject to final attribution, permission, or replacement review before public launch. Project-owned photographs are credited directly to their photographer.

Priority is given to photographs made or supplied directly by project participants, archival images with documented provenance, and images whose use can be clearly attributed.

Independent project

This website is an independent historical preservation project. It is not the official website of Action 29 Palms or the City of Twentynine Palms. References to those organizations identify sources, historical roles, or documented relationships; they do not imply sponsorship or endorsement of this Legacy Project.

Corrections and additions

The archive is designed to improve as new records surface. Dates, names, photographs, firsthand accounts, provenance information, and corrections can be incorporated while preserving the research trail behind earlier versions.
