The Story

William and Elizabeth Campbell came to the desert in 1924 for World War I veteran Bill Campbell’s health, first pitching a tent at the Oasis of Mara before homesteading 160 acres. They built a native-stone home at Campbell Ranch, now known as the Campbell House historic inn.

Working in connection with the Southwest Museum of Los Angeles, the Campbells documented thousands of archaeological finds, including the 7,500-year-old Pinto Basin site in what is now Joshua Tree National Park.
