The Story
Dr. James B. Luckie encouraged veterans to settle in the desert after World War I, where the clean, dry air and warm climate were sought by people dealing with asthma, tuberculosis, and mustard-gas-damaged lungs. The 2021 brochure credits Luckie with helping populate the community during the postwar years and identifies him as one of Twentynine Palms’ most revered benefactors and founding fathers.
The mural portrays Luckie with a patient and World War I soldiers on the battlefield, tying his medical influence directly to the veterans whose lives helped shape the town.
